Welcome to August’s Synthwave Soundcloud Round-up, week two.
Killer songs, released in the past week… here at Playmaker we always go through various SC profiles and hand pick some of our favorite jams. Yes, the synthwave scene is making moves and has been releasing pure fire yet again, let’s dive right in.
Let’s kick things off with a cover done by the up and coming Vector Seven. A rocking 80’s synthwave version of a contemporary pop song by Marlon Roudette that makes perfect sense. Vector Seven made it match really great and has made a nostalgic club banger out of a more generic track. Needless to say he made it bigger, better, stronger and faster.
Myrone also hits back with a new tune. As we can expect from this shred master, it’s filled with guitar and synth leads taking that stairway to the heavens above. The song has a great j-pop aura and cunning soundtrack character to it, executed with an outstanding level of production. Super funky and groovy, “Groove Ritual” is taken from his upcoming release “Humanity” that drops on August the 18th. This score is lit af and filled with handdrum rhythms of pure joy.
Not only did we here at Playmaker release his “Go for Broke” album on cassette last week (check it out! grab a copy while you still can! here), the ever-productive Bart Graft is back with a killer new gem from what might be on his upcoming EP. “Black Heart” is a heartfelt, soft yet melancholic tune with the typical BG keys and guitars blending in. This song sits in between some of his more chilled out ambient stuff and his 80’s stuff and it’s safe to say, it carries the best of both worlds.
Up next we have the talented Pengus, totally killing it with his latest track “Ace High”. FM basses dance around some funky beat in a very neat production that alternates between the feel of a TV theme and some Quincy Jones. Heavenly keyboards take the lead and give you a soothing, airy feeling of nostalgia.
This week we also seen a new album getting released by Timeslaves Recordings out of Cardiff. Ethereal Delusions has released his boundary pushing “Ascencion” album and this song features some deep, crooning vocals by Flammen while the arp bass and keyboard notes take the lead further into an ascending “Getaway”.
Quixotic, leader of the Hungarian synthwave scene and curator of the series of synthwave compilations with his Hungarian buddies, gave us new nostalgic tune that is rocking in true 80’s pop star fashion. “Teenage Hero” has it all, twirling keys, stabbing sinewave synths, splashes, hisses, a grooving bass and rocking drums. The mood of the song is uplifting during the chorus but the verses are really laid back, with a sax and guitar lead sneaking in for some extra loving. Wow, just brilliant and we’d imagine this song would just totally rule with some vocals on it too!
Brazilian synthwave act Pontiac At Night surely made an impression with his latest song “Cindy Crawford”. This song, named after the infamous 80’s and 90’s super model turned movie star, is a ballin track, more laid back but certainly a great effort. Some detuned synth opens the verse and then everything is just build around the groovy bassline, complete with some samples from an interview with Cindy from back in the day.
Scandroid released the finalists to his recent “Aphelion” remix competion and we’d like to highlight what we think is the best remix on that album. To us, it’s the talented Neon Rebel that takes the cake. With a sharp arpeggio and crisp production this track is a dancefloor filler that delivers.
Let’s end this week’s Soundcloud Round-up with some heavy shredding by synthwave legend Garth Knight. “Nitro” speaks for itself, it’s just straight up guitar shred only Garth Knight can do. As he did some shred songs in the past, this one just goes all the way and shows off his deep love for 80s hair metal in true authentic fashion. Not a worrie in sight, the arp synth sort of accompanies the whole song but bassically this is just Garth shredding like there’s no tomorrow.
That’s it for this week, synthriders! We’re back next week with part 3 of August summer jams. Excited already to hear and see what the scene has in store. Keep rocking!
